You can’t fast forward live TV
For the last 3 years my kids have come to know TV viewing as OnDemand with services of Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and other ondemand services through the PS3, Xbox, AppleTV, Computer, and my favorite the Roku Box. My kids are now 7 and 4 so their television viewing experience has consisted of this type of technology only.
Yesterday we decided to get a TV provider. Not, because we are missing out on TV viewing because lets be honest. Everything is on the internet legally or not. So, you don’t miss out on content. But, the reason we got it is because my wife is a sports fan and a Lakers fan at that. So, the exclusive deal that Lakers have made with Time Warner Cable SportNet is what finally drove us to order Uverse.
I am football Fan the I must say the paid NFL options are the best that other sports need to mirror. We did look into the NBA online offering but for whatever reason. Lakers games are blacked out if you want to watch them online in Los Angeles. So, that is a useless option.
When I cut the cord a few years ago we had DirecTV and I loved it but this time I decided to tryout Uverse and I already have their internet service and they are giving me a few months free to try them out.
We only have 1 TV in the house with a ethernet solution to the TV already. So, I am sure the installer enjoyed that. It was simply connecting the Motorola Cable Box into my Networking Switch and that was it. I think it took him longer to program the remote control for our TV then it did for the overall installation.
So that was it.
I must say it is nice to have NickJR back. My kids are 4 and 7 years old and I know our parenting might be considered strict when it comes to what our kids watch. We don’t let our kids watch Spungebob. If you take a step back and really watch a lot of the programming kids are watching you notice that most of the shows make comedy into the expense of someone being hurt, humiliated, and talked down too. You wonder why bullying is such a problem look at the programs they are watching. Calling someone Stupid has been accepted as if your telling someone hello.
Now, I am not blaming Television. I am blaming parents. Because, parents need to also informed their kids. Although, the shows depicted as acceptable it is not acceptable for you to put someone down and call them stupid or for you to do it.
That is the discussion we had with oldest child when we started to allow her to watch Disney’s Phineas and Ferb. The show allows her to see that kids can build almost anything as long as they try but sometimes the word Stupid is used. I am glad we had this discussion because my oldest knows although they say it in the show it is not acceptable and tollerated by us for her to use the word stupid. If she does she looses the privileged to watch such shows.
If a decade from know this ideology is confirmed and parents are encourage to educate their kids and only show them wholesome type television content the first 9 years of their life. I want my family to take the credit. #justsaying 🙂
So back to my kids learning the concept of live television.
My kids started to notice that when they change to a channel. They were not able to select the show that was already in progress to restart from the beginning. It was interesting to see them figure out that they can set the show to record, pause what they are watching, rewind only from the point they started watching, and understand that once this show is over another started. The fact my kids had see TV shows as automatic shows playing on a set playlist is really weird. But, I guess they will compare it to what they are familiar with. The same way we compared DVR and On-Demand to a VCR when we first started to get introduced to this technology.
Earthquake in Guatelama!
The last few days. My birth county of “Chapin Landia” has been rocked by number of quakes. Sure, I live in Los Angeles and earthquakes here are not a big deal. I feel safe during the earthquake because I have come to expect that buildings are build in code I don’t have to worry about bricks falling on me while I am at home or in the office.
But, in “Chapin Landia” I don’t have that same trust in the builders. It seems they use cement and bricks in everything they build.
Beneath the layers of corruption, crime, injustice, and heavy smog. Their still lies a county of rich history, humbled people, and breath taking views. That is the “Guate” that lives in my heart and when I visit the country. That is the “Guate” I remember and embrace. The last time a big earthquake hit that country I was only a thought in my parents mind and I grew up with stories of friends and family buried alive. Stories of people getting just seconds before the building they were in finally collapsing to rubble.
So, when I heard of the recent earthquake in Guatemala those are images that fill my head. Picturing the handful of family members still in that country having to dodge bricks is what I picture when I hear of large earthquake in Guatemala.
I am happy to report that they are fine. But, the next few weeks will be a challenge of many towns have lost running water and electricity. So, I will hope for the best.
If you have a spare dollar consider the Red Cross of Guatemala and donate.
